Focus on Art
The focus of Düsseldorf's museum landscape is on art museums: the diverse collection and the important exhibits in the museum kunst palast, high-value works of art from the 20th century in the K20, important works of contemporary art in the K21 collection (www.kunstsammlung.de) - in the art museums, you can really admire the wide range of creative creation (Please note: K20 closed temporarily, reopening autumn 2009! The K21 will remain unaffected.) .
Retrospectives of the History of the City
The oldest museum in Düsseldorf is the Stadtmuseum (German pages) or City Museum. It exhibits the development of the region from prehistory till today on three floors. The Stadtmuseum also includes the SchifffahrtMuseum (Maritime Museum) in the Schlossturm on the Burgplatz, which deals more with inland navigation and the Rhine.
The Mahn und Gedenkstätte (Memorial) in the Old Town serves as a reminder of the times of the Nazi reign in Düsseldorf. The exhibition, 180 square metres in size, provides information about the persecution and resistance between 1933 and 1945; there are special events to supplement the programme.
The Neanderthal Man - Witness of Prehistory
In 1856, workers found the skeleton of a prehistoric man, who later became world-famous as the "Neanderthal Man". The Neanderthal Museum deals with the relatives of present-day humans in Mettmann located close by, which shows the development of humankind and also has historical objects to touch: in the Stone Age workshop, visitors can touch archaeological objects and ancient materials.
Nature lovers should make for the Benrather Schloss palace where in the Museum für Naturkunde (Natural History), you can experience the world of animals and plants of the region up close.
Unique Exhibition Concept in the Aquazoo and Löbbecke Museum
The aim of the Aquazoo and Löbbecke Museum in the northern part of Düsseldorf is to scientifically document flora and fauna and convey the fascination which it involves. The combination of animal shows and scientific collections and the extraordinary exhibition concept in customised architecture have made the museum one of the most well-loved destinations in the City for a day out.
Art of Theatre and Poet Princes
Did you know that the history of theatre in Düsseldorf goes back 400 years? The Theatermuseum in the former Hofgärtnerhaus or Court Gardener House, which is based on the Dumont Lindemann Archive, goes back in time to illustrate this history.
Düsseldorfers have a great deal of respect for one of the most famous sons of their city - Heinrich Heine. There is a separate museum dedicated to him in Bilker Straße.
Not far from the Theatermuseum, one of the most important places where Goethe is cherished welcomes visitors. The Goethe Museum in the Schloss Jägerhof palace is home to 1,000 exhibits and is dedicated to the life and works of the great poet.
Strong and tasty: Düsseldorfer Senf
Düsseldorf is not just the city of Alt beer - it is also a mustard city. A mustard museum has also been part of the museum landscape of the City since 2004. It is located at Berger Straße 29. You can get information on the traditional mustards and specialities from the Düsseldorf tradition-rich production.

Düsseldorf is the right place for those interested in culture - the museums are located one next to the other. Art, craftsmanship, literature or films: the museum landscape in the city is varied and the art museums, in particular, are internationally renowned.
